Understanding Ram Air Turbines: How They Save Lives in Airplane Emergencies

Imagine a plane soaring thousands of feet in the air when suddenly, the engines fail. A terrifying thought, right? But there’s a critical piece of safety equipment designed for just such scenarios: the Ram Air Turbine (RAT).

What is a Ram Air Turbine (RAT)?

A RAT is a small turbine that pops out from the aircraft’s fuselage and uses the oncoming airflow (ram air) to generate power. This emergency power source can keep essential systems running, giving pilots precious time to troubleshoot or make a safe landing.

How Does a RAT Deploy?

Most RATs are designed to deploy automatically when they detect a significant loss of power. Think of it as a backup generator kicking in when the main power goes out. In some cases, pilots can also deploy the RAT manually if needed.
