Protecting Students: Statewide Raids Target Tobacco Sales Near Colleges
In an effort to create safer environments for students, a recent statewide crackdown has targeted shops selling tobacco and gutkha products near college campuses. The initiative, known as “Operation Safe Campus Zone,” has resulted in raids on over 6,000 shops in the last few days.
Thousands of Shops Raided, COPTA Act Violations Found
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ake Ravi Krishna reported that the specialized anti-narcotics EAGLE teams conducted the raids. Numerous violations of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COPTA) were discovered, leading to legal action against the offending shops. This act aims to protect young people from the dangers of tobacco and nicotine addiction.
Focus on Paan and Kirana Shops Near Educational Institutions
The operation specifically focused on paan shops and kirana stores located near colleges, which are often easily accessible to students. The initiative reflects a growing concern about the easy availability of these potentially harmful products to young people. The authorities believe that creating “safe zones” around educational institutions will significantly contribute to student health and well-being.
