Andhra Pradesh Facing Demographic Crisis: Low Fertility Rate Raises Concerns
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has raised a critical alarm about Andhra Pradesh’s declining fertility rate, currently at 1.7, significantly below the replacement level of 2.1. He warns that if left unaddressed, this demographic shift could have serious repercussions for the state’s future.
Economic and Social Challenges Loom
Naidu stressed the potential for a significant economic slowdown due to a shrinking workforce. A dwindling young population could lead to labor shortages across various sectors, impacting economic growth and development.
The Burden of an Aging Population
Beyond the economic impact, Naidu also highlighted the growing burden of geriatric care. With fewer young people to support a larger elderly population, the state’s healthcare system and social safety nets could be strained. This imbalance could further exacerbate existing urban-rural disparities, as younger individuals often migrate to urban centers for work, leaving aging populations in rural areas with fewer resources.
