Empowering Choices: Addressing the Real Fertility Crisis in Asia Pacific

This World Population Day, the conversation around fertility needs a shift. It’s not simply about birth rates, but about something much deeper: the right to choose.

The Real Crisis: Lack of Agency

The director of UNFPA Asia Pacific emphasizes that the true fertility crisis lies in the lack of agency individuals have over their reproductive lives. Many people across the region still face barriers to accessing quality family planning services and information. This limits their ability to make informed decisions about their bodies and futures. It’s not about dictating family size, but about empowering individuals to choose what’s right for them.

Focusing on Reproductive Autonomy

Moving forward, the focus needs to be on ensuring everyone has the autonomy to make their own reproductive choices. This means improving access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services, including contraception, safe abortion where legal, and maternal care. It also requires addressing social norms and inequalities that restrict individuals’ reproductive freedom.
