2025 Census: NPR Update Still on Hold, Home Ministry Confirms

The Indian Home Ministry has announced that no final decision has been made regarding the updating of the National Population Register (NPR) during the upcoming 2025 Census. Census directors have been instructed to await further guidance.

Initial Focus on Household Amenities

The pre-test, scheduled for August-September 2025, will concentrate exclusively on gathering data related to household amenities. This information will help policymakers better understand living conditions and resource distribution across the country.

No Caste Data in Initial Phase

Importantly, the pre-test questionnaire will not include questions related to caste. The second phase of the Census, which will encompass caste data collection, is still under development, and no test questionnaire for this phase has been finalized.
